影片取材于京剧名段《挡马》，讲述了杨业（吴樾饰）战死幽州后，皇上御赐给杨家的九环金锋定宋宝刀落入辽邦，杨八姐（张新童饰）与杨九妹（刘欣蕾饰）悲愤之下前往辽国夺回宝刀，返程途中遇见流落异乡的宋将焦光普（松天硕饰），双方不打不相识，后携手护送宝刀返回故土的故事。。1950年代后期，中国掀起了大跃进运动。上海里弄的家庭妇女们也响应号召，积极参加。居委会戴妈妈（陈立中 饰）全力支持她们，而解放前受尽苦难的刘大妈（范雪朋 饰）不同意儿媳王彩凤（张瑞芳 饰）参加，要求她在家相夫教子。儿子刘根发（温锡莹饰）却不同意妈妈的观点，支持妻子的行动。郑宝卿（孙道临 饰）是个典型的大男子主义，他也不同意妻子蔡桂贞（沙莉 饰）参加生产组，但蔡不顾反对，把家事理清，还当了缝纫组长。戴妈妈帮蔡桂贞一起做郑宝卿的思想工作，使他认识了自己的错误。陆阿凤（汪漪 饰）由于怕缝纫组借她的缝纫机而违心参加了缝纫组，但当缝纫组为儿童福利院赶制棉衣时，她羞愧难当......。Until recently, Fanny Mendelssohn was absent from the history books, overshadowed by her famous composer brother and excluded from the male-dominated world of classical music.
